PSD Music Programs Shine at Regional Competitions and Festivals

Peninsula School District’s music programs have achieved remarkable success across multiple competitions, demonstrating the exceptional talent and dedication of our students and educators.

At the recent Commencement Bay Music Education Association (COMBMEA) Instrumental Solo/Ensemble Competition hosted at Peninsula High School (PHS), PSD students earned an outstanding 19 spots at the upcoming WIAA State Contest. PHS secured 15 state-qualifying performances across various categories, including solos in oboe, bassoon, bass, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, mallet percussion, and piano, as well as multiple ensemble qualifications. Gig Harbor High School (GHHS) earned four state spots with outstanding performances in clarinet, euphonium, cello, and small percussion ensemble. Additionally, 11 alternates were selected between both high schools.

Our middle school musicians also demonstrated excellence, earning five Superior ratings and two Excellent ratings at the competition. The success continued with PHS Choirs and Choral Solo/Ensemble Competition at Stadium High School, where they secured five spots at the state contest, including mezzo soprano and baritone solos, along with various ensemble categories.

In a historic achievement, GHHS Jazz 1 claimed first place at the inaugural Quincy Jones Square Jazz Festival in Bremerton, winning the prestigious Ralph Mutchler Sweepstakes Award. The ensemble’s outstanding performance included pieces by Thad Jones, Quincy Jones, and Steve Weist. Individual honors went to Kaitlyn Stefanski for Best Trumpet Solo and Jame McCourt for Best Rhythm Soloist, further highlighting our students’ exceptional musicianship.

These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our students, the expertise of our music educators, and the strong support of our community. We’re proud to see our students representing PSD with such distinction.
